In ancient China, archer's rings were very popular as an accessory. These rings were designed to protect the thumb in archery. Emperors gave archer's rings as gifts to nobles and generals. The design of archer's rings has evolved over thousands of years, but the cylinder shaped rings are the most special among all rings.
扳指是一種護手的工具，初見於商代，在春秋戰國的時候十分流行。滿清族人將扳指戴在右手拇指上，拉弓射箭的時候，可以防止快速的箭擦傷手指。
板指象徵權勢地位，也體現滿州貴族尚武精神。到了滿清后期板指純為裝飾，皇帝賞𧶽有軍功的武將，也會賞板指，純粹的文臣是不戴的。
幾千年来，板指的形制，出現過很多種樣式。蒙古與清朝，主要使用桶形扳指。
